The hot glue burned my fingers as I tried to fold ribbon into rose petals. On the video playing beside me, the creator made each fold look smooth. I unfolded the ribbon, starting again, and wondered whether I had chosen a project that was more difficult than I had expected.

I decided to make the bouquet because my cousin's quinceañera was approaching, and I wanted to give her something meaningful. As a student, I did not have a large amount of money to spend on an expensive gift. I had seen videos of large flower bouquets on TikTok, but I soon discovered bouquets made with ribbon flowers. They looked elegant, lasted longer than fresh flowers, and could be personalized with different colors and decorations. I thought a handmade ribbon bouquet would be a special gift that also fit my budget. 

Before beginning, I watched several videos about making roses, arranging the flowers, and wrapping the finished bouquet. I bought ribbon, scissors, glue sticks, wooden stems, wrapping paper, and other decorations. Although the process looked easy online, making the flowers required patience. Each piece of ribbon had to be cut, folded, and glued carefully. Some of my first roses were uneven, and a few had to be taken apart and remade.

As I continued practicing, my flowers began to look more consistent. I learned how tightly to fold the ribbon and where to place the glue so it would not show. Arranging the bouquet created another challenge because I wanted it to look full without placing the flowers too close.

When I finally finished, the bouquet looked different from the loose pieces of ribbon that had covered my kitchen table. More importantly, it looked like a gift created especially for my cousin. Seeing the finished bouquet made the hours of cutting, folding, and gluing feel worthwhile.

Before this experience, I thought of handmade gifts mainly as an affordable alternative to store-bought presents. After completing the bouquet, I understood that their value also comes from the time, effort, and personal choices involved in making them. The bouquet began as one quinceañera gift, but it also made me wonder whether I could continue creating ribbon bouquets for other people.
